Gate Pricing Factors: What Changes a Gate Quote
A gate quote needs to account for the opening, frame, posts, hardware and installation. Listing the gate separately makes its scope easier to see. Here are the factors to check before pricing it.
Size and type
- Opening width. Opening width affects material quantities, frame design and hardware selection.
- Single or double. For a double swing gate, price both leaves, hinges, latch or locking hardware, and any drop rods or cane bolts the design needs.
- Walk gate or drive gate. Size the clear opening for the people, vehicles or equipment that will use it.
- Height. Check material quantities and wind loading for the gate's height, material and design.
- Swing or slide. Sliding and rolling gates need track or rollers, room to slide and different hardware.
Material and build
- Material and style to match the fence: wood, vinyl, chain link, ornamental steel or aluminum.
- Frame and bracing. A metal frame, or a wood frame with a diagonal brace running from the bottom hinge-side corner up to the top latch-side corner, adds cost and helps the gate stay square. That orientation lets a wood brace work in compression; the connections and frame design also affect sag.
- Anti-sag hardware, like a cable and turnbuckle kit, on wider or heavier leaves. The cable runs the opposite way from a wood brace, from the top hinge-side corner down to the bottom latch-side corner, so it works in tension.
- Matching an existing fence, which can mean special-ordering pickets, panels or finish.
Posts and footings
- Gate posts are often heavier and set deeper than line posts, with more concrete per hole.
- Replacing old gate posts that are leaning, rotted or undersized for the new gate.
Hardware
- Hinges rated for the gate's weight and width.
- Latch type: gravity latch, lockable latch, two-sided latch, or a self-closing and self-latching setup where required.
- Pool barrier rules. Gates in a pool barrier may have to meet local code for self-closing, self-latching hardware and latch height. Check your local rules.
- Extras: gate stops, wheels for heavy leaves, and handles or pulls.
Site conditions
- Slope or grade across the opening, which can mean a raked gate, extra ground clearance or regrading.
- Ground and access: rock, roots, tight side yards or no room for equipment.
- Swing clearance, so the gate clears the ground, walkway or driveway through its full swing.
Scope extras
- Tear-out and haul-off of the old gate.
- Prep for a future gate opener (heavier posts, conduit), if the customer asks.
- Permits or HOA approval, where needed.
- Trips. Special-order gates can mean a second trip to hang them.
FAQ
Should a gate be priced separately from the fence?
It can help. A gate takes its own posts, hardware and labor, and listing it on its own line makes the quote easier for the customer to read.
What adds to the cost of a double gate?
Price both leaves, the required hardware, posts, footings and installation labor. For a double swing gate, include hinges and any latch, drop rods or cane bolts the design calls for.
Do gates need bigger posts?
Often, yes. A gate puts swinging, leveraged load on its posts. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and local code for post size and depth.
